Exclusions are the part that matters

A hat can't stop a married couple pulling each other, and when it happens the exchange loses its point — they were buying each other something anyway. Add them as an excluded pair and the generator routes around it in both directions. Same for siblings, for two people who sit a metre apart all year, or for anyone who swapped last time and wants someone new.

One caution: exclusions compound. In a group of six, four exclusion pairs can leave no valid arrangement at all. If a draw won't resolve, drop the least important constraint rather than shrinking the group.

Office draws vs family draws

The generator builds a single closed loop of givers and recipients using the browser's cryptographic randomness, then checks it against your exclusions and rebuilds if any rule is broken. That structure is what guarantees no self-matches and no orphans — shuffling a list and pairing it off doesn't. Nothing is sent to a server.
